Santa Ana school district officials warn of fraudulent ‘Youth Employment Program’ emails

The Santa Ana Unified School District is warning the community that a staff member’s account was compromised, leading to a fraudulent email being sent out.

On Saturday, the district put out a social media post after officials learned that an “unauthorized message was sent from a compromised staff email account to many students.”

The email referenced a “Youth Employment Program” and invited students to apply for a remote work opportunity. It also requested financial or personal information, officials said.

Any students or community members who received the message are advised to not click any links, complete any forms or share any information. Recipients should delete the email right away, officials said, noting that they will never ask for anyone’s personal information via email.

“SAUSD will never send emails asking students or families to provide bank account numbers, financial information, passwords or other sensitive personal information through email or external links,” the district said.

Anyone who may have already provided personal or financial information in response to the message is asked to contact SAUSD School Police right away: 714-558-5535.

Officials noted that the compromised account was secured by the district’s technology team, which is also working to prevent further unauthorized messages.
