Kirk Franklin proposes ‘Gospel Avengers’ Super Bowl halftime show: ‘I’d be too scared to do it alone’ | WATCH

*Kirk Franklin, the renowned gospel artist and multiple Grammy winner, has addressed fan speculation about him headlining the Super Bowl halftime show—and his response comes with both humility and a bold creative vision.

In a recent social media video shared across Instagram, a fan asked Franklin if he’d ever perform during the big game. The gospel icon responded enthusiastically but with characteristic honesty: he’d be open to it, but not alone.

“Not by myself!” Franklin said with a laugh. “I’d be too scared to do it by myself.”  The 20-time Grammy winner admitted that the massive stage feels too daunting to tackle solo.

The ‘Gospel Avengers’ Concept

Instead of a solo performance, Franklin pitched an epic collaborative concept he calls the “Gospel Avengers“—a star-studded lineup of gospel heavyweights drawing inspiration from the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and others with surprise appearances.

“Maybe if we put together a squad,” Franklin suggested. “Like a gospel Avengers type of moment. Kinda like how Snoop and Dre, Kendrick and Em did it. That was fire.”

Franklin turned the question back to fans, asking who they’d want to see in the squad—including himself, of course—sparking widespread discussion online. The concept builds on Franklin’s recent tour experience; his 2024 Reunion Tour featured Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, and the Clark Sisters, a lineup he affectionately called “The Avengers” as the artists united on stage.

Who Could Join the Lineup?

Suggested names from commenters and reports include gospel heavyweights like Fred Hammond, Mary Mary, Tye Tribbett, Tamela Mann, Deitrick Haddon, John P. Kee, Le’Andria Johnson, and Yolanda Adams—potentially with mass choirs for that signature gospel energy.

The idea quickly gained traction online. Fellow gospel powerhouse Tye Tribbett responded enthusiastically, writing, “Ayyyye I’m witit,” along with an eyes emoji. Television personality Scott Evans also chimed in, telling Franklin, “Chamonnnnneeee we ready!!”

A New Era for Halftime

Franklin’s comments come amid ongoing conversations about diversity in Super Bowl halftime performances. Since Jay-Z’s Roc Nation began overseeing the halftime show in 2020, the lineup has featured Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, The Weeknd, Dr. Dre and friends, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar, and most recently Bad Bunny—whose record-breaking performance celebrated Latino culture and drew massive global viewership.

Some fans are excited about a gospel-led show bringing uplifting vibes to the world’s biggest stage, while others debate its fit or joke about potential reactions. But Franklin’s “Avengers” approach might actually be the most viable path forward—by grouping the biggest names in gospel together, the show could offer a hit-packed, high-production experience that appeals to a massive global audience while easing the pressure on any single performer.

Would It Happen?

Nothing has been confirmed, and the NFL has made no announcements about future halftime performers. But Franklin’s vision has already captured fans’ imaginations. A gospel-led halftime show would be a massive milestone for the league—while gospel artists frequently perform the National Anthem or appear in “Soulful Celebration” specials, the genre has yet to anchor the primary 12-minute halftime slot.

For now, Franklin is content to let fans dream alongside him. “Who would you like to see in that gospel Avengers moment for Super Bowl?” he asked. “If you include me, that’d be really sweet. I’d really appreciate it.”

Would you watch a “Gospel Avengers” halftime show? The conversation—and the dream lineup—continues to grow.
