Stone Cold Steve Austin is undoubtedly one of the best performers of all time.
In addition to participating in numerous memorable feuds throughout his career, he has had an ability to interact with the WWE Universe that has very few equals in the history of wrestling. His career could have been longer without the serious injuries he suffered, but that didn’t affect his legacy and the esteem fans have for him.
His gimmick has had a success that is difficult to describe in words, having projected wrestling into a new era (the so-called ‘Attitude Era’). It is no coincidence that WWE Universe continues to hope for Stone Cold’s return to the ring, which could take place at WrestleMania 43 next year, as the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ will be staged in Saudi Arabia for the first time in history.
Steve Austin is a wrestling legend
During the latest edition of ‘Wrestling Observer Radio’, renowned producer David Sahadi revealed that Vince McMahon was not satisfied with the way the crowd had greeted Steve Austin the first few times: “Stone Cold Steve Austin was nearly killed, nearly dead on arrival, because Vince wanted to be heel. And when he started getting popular, it’s right before the Mike Tyson thing. I don’t know the exact date, but Vince held a meeting in corporate and I was there. Kevin Dunn, some corporate executives were too.”
He also added: “Vince is like, ‘You know what? I want fans to boo Stone Cold Steve Austin and they’re not. They’re cheering him. So we need heels. I’m thinking about turning him back into like the Ringmaster character, getting his hair stubbly and wearing the powder blue tights.’”
Stone Cold was certainly one of the most beloved performers of all time and it is safe to say that professional wrestling would not have become so popular without his fundamental contribution. His appearances have always thrilled WWE Universe and the memory of his sensational exploits has not faded even with the passage of time.
