Screening of ‘Bird Sanctuary’ in New Paltz on April 19

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — The 2024 film “Bird Sanctuary,” filmed primarily in New Paltz by local filmmakers, will be shown Sunday, April 19, an announcement said.

The film by cinematographer Alex Young and writer and director Myles Flusser both New Paltz High School graduates, will be shown at 5 p.m. at Denizen Theatre, 10 Main St., Suite 501. The screening will be followed by a live, in-person question-and-answer session with the filmmakers and cast, the announcement said.

“Bird Sanctuary” follows a group of friends through the latter years of their adolescence, owing to Young and Flusser, who met when they were 7 years old. “Set against the majestic Hudson Valley landscapes of their childhood, Bird Sanctuary unfolds as a dark, epic coming-of-age tale exploring grief, addiction, and the passage of time,” the announcement said. “As the filmmakers grew, so did their characters — their wounds, struggles, and self-discovery woven into the fabric of the movie.”

Other New Paltz High School graduates who act in or contributed to the film include Amelia Bacon, Rose Barge, Chance Stover, Allie Defoe, Maeve Flusser, Matthew Gose, James Hyland, Maddy Leitner, Parker McWilliams, Parker Stahl, Andie Caroll, Gabe Alibone, and Isabel Thompson.
