Maggie Gyllenhaal has nothing but praise for The Bride! star Jessie Buckley.

During the movie’s U.S. premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on Tuesday, March 3, Gyllenhaal, 48, exclusively spoke to about her experience seeing Buckley, 36, on an award-winning streak forHamnet.

“I’ve known Jessie a long time,” Gyllenhaal said. “She was in my first film, The Lost Daughter, and I think she’s really brilliant. I’m so pleased for her about everything that’s happening in the world, seeing her talent.”

Buckley plays Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet, a period drama based on the 2020 Maggie O’Farrell novel of the same name. It follows Agnes and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) as they cope with the loss of their son, Hamnet, which inspires William to write Hamlet.

Since the movie’s release, Buckley has won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and an Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

She is also nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars. This marks Buckley’s second Academy Award nomination, following her 2021 nod for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Lost Daughter.

Buckley is now tackling another literary icon as the Bride of Frankenstein in Gyllenhaal’s latest film. The movie was inspired by 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein, which in turn was based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel.

Buckley stars in the romance movie alongside Christian Bale, who plays Frankenstein’s monster.

“I think in this movie, it’s like next level… I don’t think anyone’s ever seen what she does in this movie,” Gyllenhaal, who directed and wrote the movie, told of Buckley’s performance.
