Maggie Gyllenhaal reacts to close friend’s award season winning streak ahead of Oscars

Maggie Gyllenhaal is showing love to her longtime friend Jessie Buckley as she dominates awards season.

Buckley stars in The Bride! written and directed by Gyllenhaal which had its U.S. premiere on Tuesday, March 3. Gyllenhaal spoke with People about Buckley’s success this awards season and their close friendship.

“I’ve known Jessie a long time,” she said. “She was in my first film, The Lost Daughter, and I think she’s really brilliant. I’m so pleased for her about everything that’s happening in the world, seeing her talent.”

Buckley has been receiving widespread critical acclaim for her role as Agnes in Chloe Zhao’s film Hamnet. She has won a Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice Award, BAFTA, and Actor Award for her performance and she is nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards. Buckley also received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Gyllenhaal’s film The Lost Daughter.

Speaking to People about Buckley’s role in The Bride! Gyllenhaal said, “I think in this movie, it’s like next level. I don’t think anyone’s ever seen what she does in this movie.”

Buckley also shared at The Bride! premiere that she’s “lucky and proud to be part of two films that I adored making,” and that, “I want to keep offering something that’s bold and daring.”

The Bride! is out now in theaters.
