Like father, like daughter: North West samples “Coldest Winter” and proves music is in her DNA

It’s becoming more obvious every day that North West isn’t just a spectator in her father’s world.

The 12-year-old artist just dropped another beat that samples one of Ye’s most emotional songs, “Coldest Winter,” from the 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak. By reaching back into her father’s catalog to flip a track that was so personal to him, North is showing that she has the same “ear” for production that made Kanye a legend.

North is clearly in her element when it comes to music and fashion. She’s moving with that same unmistakable confidence Ye has, pairing her own personal style with a sound that’s experimental and new.

North has already been making major moves. She produced the rage heavy track “Justswagup” for Lil Wayne’s son, Lil Novi (featuring Mag! c), proving that the next generation of rap royalty is already working together. Before that, she became a household name with her chorus on “Talking” from the Vultures 1 album and showed off her bilingual skills rapping in Japanese on the FKA twigs song “Childlike Things.” Her growing list of tracks and production credits also includes her solo single “Piercing On My Hand,” the high-energy “Bomb” with her sister Chicago West, her song “It’s Northie,” and her aptly titled instrumental beat “Sample.”

She has even teased snippets like “Foreign Chopsticks” and “Not Just an Era,” keeping fans on their toes for her upcoming debut album, Elementary School Dropout.

By sampling “Coldest Winter,” North is bridging the gap between her father’s history and her own future. Whether she’s at a fashion show or in the studio, she is moving with the same fearless energy that defined her father’s career. The West legacy is definitely in safe hands.
