Elijah Wood has addressed speculation about whether he will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, saying he would not want another actor to portray the character while he is still able to do so.
In an interview with The Times U.K., Wood spoke about the possibility of returning to Middle-earth for the project directed by Andy Serkis. While he did not confirm his involvement, he acknowledged growing anticipation around the film.
“Ian kind of spilled the beans at a convention last August, so there’s a good chance,” Wood said, referring to comments previously made by co-star Ian McKellen. “I can’t officially confirm anything until it’s announced, but I’m thrilled about the prospect of another film.”
Wood added that fans tend to be protective of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world when new projects are announced.
“Fans get protective when new Middle-earth projects are discussed, hoping they’ll maintain the integrity of the world,” he said. “But this story is exciting and fun. There’s a sense of getting the old gang back together.”
The upcoming film is expected to explore events that occur between the timeline of The Hobbit trilogy and the opening of The Lord of the Rings. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are developing the project with Andy Serkis directing.
Asked about McKellen’s earlier comment that he would prefer to continue playing Gandalf rather than see another actor take on the role, Wood said he understands the sentiment.
“I wouldn’t want anyone else playing Frodo either, as long as I’m alive and able,” Wood said.
Wood first portrayed Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. He reprised the role in the two sequels, helping bring Tolkien’s story of the One Ring to global audiences.
He later returned briefly to the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012.
The upcoming film will reunite several figures behind the earlier trilogies. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the project, with Walsh and Boyens also writing the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for release in 2027.
