Andy Dick has opened up about the overdose that nearly killed him, sharing blunt details about the moment his heart stopped and the long recovery that followed.
The comedian spoke on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast and said he was “clinically dead” when paramedics found him on a Los Angeles sidewalk late last year. He remembers almost nothing from the collapse itself and woke up only after emergency crews brought him back.
The incident happened on December 9, 2025, outside a corner store. Dick said first responders told him he wasn’t breathing and had turned purple by the time they reached him. The experience forced him into a difficult but necessary period of reflection about his health and history with substance use.
A medical scan reveals the damage
After the overdose, Dick moved into a sober-living facility where he’s tested regularly and kept in a structured routine. During follow-up evaluations, doctors performed a CAT scan and found what he described as “five to seven holes” in his brain. He believes these spots are now affecting his memory, and the discovery shook him more than he expected.
His representative later explained that the abnormalities are consistent with lesions, which may come from earlier injuries combined with the toll of addiction. For Dick, the news was another reminder that the body keeps score, and recovery is about more than staying clean.
He admitted that sobriety still feels like a challenge at times, especially when boredom hits. Old habits and the search for excitement, he said, have been part of his personality for decades, and the shift toward stability hasn’t been easy. These days, he avoids alcohol, pills, and drugs entirely and joked that coffee is the only thing he leans on.
Family has become his anchor. Dick has three children and a third grandchild on the way, and he says that responsibility gives him a reason to stay focused. He’s trying to rebuild his life quietly, one steady day at a time.
