Explosion at Baltimore Coca-Cola bottling facility injures four, one critically

Four people were injured in an explosion Sunday morning at the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. facility on North Kresson Street, according to Baltimore Fire Department officials.

According to department spokesperson John Marsh, crews responded to the facility around 10:30 a.m. for a report of an injured person.

Marsh said arriving units were told an explosion had occurred involving equipment that handles carbon dioxide.

Four people were located, rescued and treated for injuries, Marsh said. Of the four, one was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, one was transported in serious but stable condition, and two were treated and released.

“We’re continuing to conduct a thorough investigation, but what we’ve learned is that earlier today, employees of an external vendor were injured while performing CO₂-related work inside our facility at 701 N. Kresson St. in Baltimore, MD,” said the company’s vice president of Corporate Communications, Brian Little. “Those individuals were immediately transported to a local hospital for evaluation and care.”

Little noted that all Coca-Cola employees are safe and accounted for and that the facility is expected to “reopen soon.”

The explosion remains under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available, Marsh said.
