Ryan Gosling has crazy, stupid love for Harry Styles—kind of.
As the La La Land actor took the 8H stage to deliver his opening monologue for the Mar. 7 episode of Saturday Night Live—which he hosted alongside musical guest Gorillaz—the “Watermelon Sugar” hitmaker stole the show with a surprise appearance in the crowd.
Shortly after Ryan, 45, began his monologue, he stopped dead in his tracks, asking, “Is that Harry Styles?”
The camera then panned to the Grammy winner as the show’s live audience erupted with applause. Looking just as stunned as the crowd, Ryan added, “What are you doing here, man?” to which Harry, 32, replied, “Well, I’m hosting next week and it’s been a while, so I just wanted to watch, get a feel for it.”
“Yeah, that’s so professional, that’s awesome you’re here,” Ryan said nervously. “I just wish someone would have told me—welcome.”
“I have a new movie coming out, it’s called Project Harry Styles,” Ryan added before quickly correcting himself. “Nope, it’d be a good movie, though. It’s called Project Hail Mary.”

After noting that the film is “like E.T. meets Interstellar,” he went into a heartfelt monologue accompanied by piano music about the human existence on “the pale blue dot” that is Earth. As his speech continued, the camera panned back to the One Direction alum who nodded in agreement with Ryan’s words.
Pausing his speech abruptly, Ryan—who shares daughters Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, 9, with wife Eva Mendes—wondered why his airtime was cut short. As he quipped, “I’m sorry, why are we on Harry’s Styles?” to which the “Aperture” singer responded, “I don’t know, I’m just listening.”
In an effort to regain the spotlight, The Notebook actor joked, “Well, could you listen less cool? I think your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue.”
After Ryan picked up where he left off in his speech, the camera angle went into a split screen of him and Harry.
“What’s going on?” Ryan interjected again. “I’m just trying to understand why we’d be in a split screen. Come on, guys. Let’s get rid of the split screen.”
In perfect timing, the camera effects swiped Ryan out of frame, allowing only Harry to remain on-camera as the audience laughed.
“No, not like that,” the Barbie star added. “You know what I meant. Come on, what’s going on with camera 2.”
Clearly, the SNL crew is full of Harry Styles fans as a cameraman came into frame wearing an “I heart Harry” sweatshirt.
“Look, we all heart Harry, okay?” Ryan said before giving up on his heartfelt speech for good, asking stage crew to remove his prop. “Just get this stupid Earth out of here. Get it out.”
