SNL viewers stunned by Brit band’s unexpected surprise as Ryan Gosling hosts

Ryan Gosling’s Saturday Night Live hosting appearance brought a surprise for viewers as he was joined by an iconic British band.

The Hollywood star, most known for his award-winning roles in The Notebook, La La Land, and Barbie, returned to host Saturday Night Live on March 7 alongside musical guest Gorillaz, making it his fourth time hosting the NBC comedy series. Viewers were stunned as the band, fronted by Damon Albarn, appeared to perform their hit song Clint Eastwood.

Seeing the band appear one fan took to X to express their excitement as they wrote, “Gorillaz withClint Eastwood. What a cool throwback. SNL should do more of this #SNL.”

A second enthused, “Gorillaz did a great performance of their song Clint Eastwood for their first performance. One of my favorite songs ever from them. #SNL.” A third posted, “Clint Eastwood in 2026. I’m here for it even it wasn’t expected. Very on brand for them to perform a 25 year old song. I’m guessing they never performed it before on #SNL”

A fourth social media user commented, “Won’t lie seeing The Gorilliaz as actual humans on a stage is trippy af #Snl.” A fifth said, “Seeing Clint Eastwood being performed live is a unexpected surprise. #SNL.”

Another posted, “Gorillaz just performed Clint Eastwood. It just brought so many nostalgic feelings! The song is 26 years old! #SNL.” One more agreed, “I think Coachella really hurt Damon Albarn and he wants to remind America he has bangers #snl.”

Meanwhile, one fan only just realised that Gorillaz are actually British. They said, “People realizing #gorillaz was some British guy this whole time: #SNL.”

Ryan’s hosting gig comes weeks before the 45-year-old is set to star in Project Hail Mary, a science-fiction film based on Andy Weir’s novel by the same name. The movie, which follows a middle school teacher sent into space as the world faces chaos, opens in theaters on March 20.

Another British musician also gatecrashed the show, with Ryan barely making it through his opening monologue as Harry Styles was spotted in the audience.

The pop star, seated in the audience ahead of his own hosting gig on SNL next week, seemingly caught Ryan off guard. “What are you doing here, man?” he asked from the stage. Harry then replied that he was hosting the following week and had come to watch and “get a feel for it.”

Ryan then joked, “Yeah, that’s so professional. I just wish someone would have told me. Can we just please get him off the screen,” he then looked at the cameraman, who was wearing a “I love Harry” shirt.
