DENVER (KDVR) — A person reported missing Saturday evening was killed in an avalanche near Copper Mountain, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
Rescue groups received a missing report Saturday evening for a snowmobiler in the Boss Basin area, which is on Resolution Creek south of Ptarmigan Pass and a few miles west of Copper Mountain.
Summit County Rescue Group, Vail Mountain Rescue and the Summit and Eagle County Sheriff’s offices responded to the area, where they found an avalanche and ski and snowmobile tracks leading into the avalanche, the CAIC report states.
Early Sunday morning, the rescue groups and Flight For Life searched the area and found the person dead in the avalanche debris.
CAIC staff will visit the avalanche site Sunday to find out more information. The CAIC on Sunday morning did not identify the person killed.
This marks the first deadly avalanche incident of the 2025-2026 winter season, according to CAIC’s reports. Last season there were three avalanche deaths, one in January 2025 and two in February 2025.
This comes after a snowstorm hit Colorado late last week, bringing around eight inches of snow to the area where the avalanche happened, according to the National Weather Service. Some places, like Berthoud Pass, saw up to 18 inches of snow.
