Lorenzo Musetti is back in action at the Indian Wells Masters 1000.
The young Italian ace was playing his first official tournament since the Australian Open, in which he suffered an injury in the adductor area in the quarterfinals. The world No.5 – who had reached the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park for the first time in his career – was putting in one of the best performances of his career against Novak Djokovic on the iconic Rod Laver Arena, but had to retire as he led by two sets to nil.
It is not the first time that the body has betrayed Lorenzo during an important match, if we consider that he had faced a similar situation last year both at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 and at Roland Garros (against Carlos Alcaraz in both cases).
Musetti lost to Fucsovics
The talent from Carrara hoped to be able to return to play already at the Acapulco ATP 500, but he preferred not to risk it and arrived in California several days early to get used to the conditions. He was perfectly aware that he would struggle at the beginning and the draw was not particularly lucky, as he had to face Hungarian veteran Marton Fucsovics.
Musetti’s level was lower than expected and his opponent took advantage of it to win in two sets, dominating in the second part of the match thanks to the Italian’s numerous errors.
Through a video posted on his Instagram profile, former world number 9 Fabio Fognini commented on Lorenzo’s premature elimination in Indian Wells: “Musetti needs time to find the right sensations on a physical and mental level. He was out of action for a month after the Australian Open, which is why he has to be patient and be aware that it’s a normal process. His goal must be to regain confidence in view of the tournaments on red clay. I hope he can raise his level at the Miami Open.”
Musetti will have to defend many points on his beloved red clay, where he had achieved extraordinary results last season.
