Mama Duke talks new single, SXSW plans

AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you haven’t heard the name Mama Duke by now, you’re missing out.

The Austin recording artist/rapper can do it all, and since her appearance on “America’s Got Talent” she has seen her career take off.

“Everything feels better, tastes better, is better,” said Mama Duke. “I have so many things going on, SXSW is coming up, it is a weird world to be both building brand and building Mama Duke.”

One of her songs, “Feels so good to be you”, which she performed on the show went viral and she has plans to release a music video for the song soon.

“We are sitting at about 4.3 million [plays] and the music video is about to come out in April,” Mama Duke said.

Mama Duke has a lot going on, but that hasn’t slowed her down as she says she is working on a new single.

“This next single has to be great right?” said Mama Duke. “You can’t do ‘so good to be you’, 4 point whatever million [plays], viral, then you have a sleeper. We have been working hard. The next single, I think we can do a little exclusive, it is called “Head in the clouds” because that is what it feels like right now. I am gearing up for that. I am going to give you an exclusive. I am about to be on another TV show. We have been working, we have been making music, we have been producing, we have been building.”

With SXSW kicking off this week Mama Duke says she is excited to spread the word about “ATX Social Club,” which is a platform where she connects with artists and now it has evolved.

“ATX Social Club started out as a live stream hip hop show, but it has grown as I have and now we are doing sessions and workshops,” said Mama Duke.

“What is cool about ATX Social Club is you have a couple of people that do these things really well, or I do these things really well, and then being able to come together and everyone lift each other at the same time, it really builds an incredible community,” said artist and producer J-Dash.

Speaking of ATX Social Club, there will be an official showcase at SXSW. J-Dash, Mama Duke and a number of other recording artists will be performing.

“To be able to create in a cooler space, a bigger space like SXSW, to be presented an official showcase, which to me means you have done the work, it is a little nod, it is here give back and that is all I want to do,” Mama Duke said.

You can see Mama Duke, J-Dash and more artists perform at 7 p.m. on March 12 at Swan Dive.
