Hampstead barn from 1700s catches fire; no injuries reported

No one was hurt after a barn caught fire in Hampstead on Sunday evening.

Officials said the fire broke out just before 6 p.m. on Main Street in a barn from the 1700s that was filled with antiques.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene, including crews from Sandown and Derry.

Neighbors ran to alert the homeowner that the barn was on fire.

“It’s pretty upsetting. It’s an old historical building and the barn, New England loses barns at a rate that’s astronomical,” said neighbor Gary Cyr. “It’s just a shame to lose an old, beautiful structure like that.”

Fire crews believe the fire may have been electrical as the barn had older wiring, but the cause remains under investigation.

William Warnock, deputy fire chief in Hampstead, urged residents to make sure their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
